When teachers are given continuous professional training, they can improve their teaching practices However, reaching every teacher for continuous professional development is always not easy. With the proliferation of mobile devices coupled with the access to Internet, governments and stakeholders can extend access to teacher professional development. My team and I engage in developing online courses for teachers. These courses focus on transforming the 20th Century Teaching (which is teacher-centred) to the 21st Century Teaching (which is learner-centred), with technology as an enabler. Below are some of the courses we have offered so far.
4. Teacher Professional Development for Remote Teaching: During Covid-19, about 1.7 billion students were left at home while schools were closed. Teachers too, stayed at home. We developed an online Course to introduce teachers to the different ways to engage students remotely. We introduced them to different technology tools starting from the use of Radio, TV, smartphones, and mobile apps in teaching and emotional intelligence for educators. This course was developed as part of the Open Education for a Better World (OE4BW) 2020 programme. It was a 4 weeks course offered between May 25 to June 24, 2020. 401 teachers registered while 156 received their completion and attendance certificates.
3. Becoming a 21st Century Teacher: This is an improved version of the previous online course for teachers. It had different levels of activities that promote colaboration, learning and sharing among teachers. It is a 4 weeks online course planned to start on January 13 to February 12, 2020. Details will follow later.2. Becoming a 21st Century Teacher: The training aimed at introducing school teachers on the 21st century teaching and 21st century skills while integrating technology in their teaching and learning activities. The training was run over MOODLE from May 20 to July 3rd, 2019. In this training a total of 99 secondary school teachers from different parts of Tanzania Participated.
